What Our Dispute Is About:Telstra is treating its highly skilled workforce as second class citizens and is refusing to pay an equivalent payrise to employees who accepted a non-union agreement. Telstra refused to negotiate with the unionised workers until Workchoices was abolished in July 2009. Telstra continue to use the Global Financial Crisis as an excuse as to why they will not pay equal pay to it's employees who choose to be union members.

Following on from CEPU-Telstra workers Rallies around Australia, it was South Australia's turn last Friday 28/5/10. Over 100 Telstra employees protested outside Telstra' T-Life Shop in Rundle Mall supported by member of the public who signed postcards addressed to David Thodey urging the CEO to put customers, shareholders & employees first and resolve the ongoing dispute.
Telstra employees have now been without a new EBA for 590 days.
What our dispute is about:
Unfortunately the long running dispute to achieve an acceptable EA in Telstra is not yet resolved. Industrial action which commenced in December 2008 continues. Telstra workers have now been without a new EBA for 580+ Days. Telstra managements stand on the pay rises on offer is simply not adequate in the circumstances. In all the consultation with members around the country, members overwhelmingly told us that the negotiations needed to do better regarding the pay outcomes.
What are the issues:
Over the 2005 to 2008 period Telstra workers improved productivity by 14% to 21% based on OECD data and based on comparison with like companies.
The payrises over the life of the 2005-2008 were well below the market rates prevailing at that time. Telstra workers were well behind CPI over that period where price increases for a basket of goods rose dramatically. This included petrol, groceries, rates, insurance etc;
Telstra continued to shed thousands of jobs, remaining workers picked up the slack to get the job done.
At the same time Telstra continued to be one of the most profitable companies in Australia. In the financial year to June 30 2009, Telstra reported a net profit of $4.073 billion. Despite this Telstra have consistently used the Global Financial Crisis as a reason why they will not pay its unionised workforce the same payrise that they have already paid to workers who 'accepted' Employee Collective Agreements (ECA's) not negotiated with the unions.
